Cristiano Ronaldo has issued a statement following the incident in Manchester United’s 1-0 defeat to Everton.
A video of Ronaldo smashing a phone to the ground has surfaced on social media. The 37-year-old bought smashed an Everton fan’s phone.
Ronaldo and his Manchester United team-mates were booed after the incident. Several police officers were nearby but no action was taken at that time.
In a statement on his Instagram account, Ronaldo said: “It’s never easy to deal with emotions in difficult moments such as the one we are facing.
“Nevertheless, we always have to be respectful, patient and set the example for all the youngsters who love the beautiful game.
“I would like to apologize for my outburst and, if possible, I would like to invite this supporter to watch a game at Old Trafford as a sign of fair-play and sportsmanship.”
United remain seventh in the Premier League after Saturday’s defeat, six points behind fourth-placed Tottenham. Arsenal and West Ham are also vying for fourth place.
Everton’s winning goal was scored by Anthony Gordon. The 21-year-old scored in the first half as Everton are now four points clear of 18th-placed Burnley.
