Jamie Carragher believes Mohamed Salah’s comments to the Spanish media were a message to Liverpool board to offer him a new contract.
Salah has cast doubt on his future at the club, opening the door to a move to Real Madrid or Barcelona in a recent interview with AS.
The Liverpool striker said: “I think Madrid and Barcelona are great clubs.
“We don’t know what will happen in the future, but for now I am focused on winning the Premier League and the Champions League again.”
When asked how long he will stay at Anfield, Salah replied: “That is a difficult question, but at the moment things are in the hands of the club.
“Of course I want to break records here, to repeat every club record but everything is in the hands of the club.”
But Jamie Carragher believes Salah’s comments are a direct message to Liverpool board.
The Liverpool legend wrote in the Daily Telegraph: “The timing of the player initiating transfer stories is also strange. My view is it was a message to Liverpool’s owners to offer him a lucrative new deal.
“Seeing their players being courted by the La Liga clubs would have concerned Liverpool five years ago. Not now.
“I am not convinced Madrid and Barca can afford Salah. Investing well in excess of £125 million on a player who will turn 29 this summer is not good business.”
