There was controversy as Real Madrid lost 2-0 to Real Sociedad as Los Blancos were furious that VAR didn’t intervene to award them a penalty after Vinicius Junior went down as Geronimo Rulli came to try to collect the ball.
The referee in the VAR room for the match was Jose Luis Munuera Montero and he was also in the VAR room for Los Blancos’ 3-0 defeat at Eibar earlier in the season.
On that occasion, Eibar took the lead through a goal that had to be checked by VAR for a possible offside, before it was ultimately – and correctly – given.
Munuera Montero celebrated that goal with his assistants with high fives and Real Madrid TV have re-shared this footage in the aftermath of the Vinicius and Rulli incident.
While the official was probably celebrating the fact that his team was able to get to the bottom of the matter and correctly award that Eibar goal, his gesture was criticised by many at the time and he was accused of lacking impartiality.
